My First Fashion Week as a New Yorker

I never really knew what “New York Fashion Week” meant until I moved here. Sure, I’ve seen pictures in magazines of celebrities attending all of the shows for years. And who can forget that famous episode of Sex and the City (I can’t forget any of them, because it’s my favorite show of all time!) where Carrie is asked to walk in a show as a “real” woman and falls on her face?  I’ve always wondered if it was as glamorous at it appears, but I never really thought I would get to experience it in my first six months of living here.
When Dirty & Thirty asked me if I wanted to attend the Vivienne Tam fashion show at Lincoln Center, I was SO excited! But, little did I know that for the next four days, I would receive Fashion Week invites every day. (Hashtag: Humblebrag.)
Normally I wouldn’t go out of my way to spend so much time around people who don’t like to eat food (models), but I wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to experience this week in all of it’s glory. Plus, at 31 years old, I’m happy and grateful to have a very positive body image and high level of confidence. (It comes with age!)
Night 1: My first stop on the NYFW train was the BCBG party at the ultra-exclusive Boom Boom Room, owned by Andre Balazs. Although I did not recognize anyone there, I felt like I had walked into an episode of Gossip Girl. The DJ was great, the drinks were free and endless, and the food was delicious… And I was the only one eating it.
Carmen Electra
Night 2: The next day was the Vivienne Tam fashion show at the Lincoln Center. I didn’t know what I was doing or where I was supposed to go, as it was my first fashion show, but I finally found my way into the show room and I couldn’t have felt more New York. It was, by far, one of the coolest things I have ever been invited to. As soon as I walked though the door, I was wowed. A real Fashion Week fashion show with a real high-fashion runway, which was wrapped in plastic until the show started. Every seat was filled and every photographer in North America seemed to be there. I immediately spotted Carmen Electra, dancing in her seat, as well as Uzo Aduba, of ‘Orange is the New Black’ fame. The show, which featured Tam’s 2015 Spring Collection of prints, corals, greens, and blues, lasted a short 10 minutes or so, which seemed so short to a NYFW virgin like me! Immediately after the show was done, everyone raced out of their seats, so I followed, not knowing why I was getting up so fast. I then realized it was to mob the celebs, who were quickly escorted elsewhere. All in all, a great experience.

Night 3: I was invited to the Nylon Magazine and the one of the Meatpacking District’s hot spots, TAO Downtown. I arrived “fashionably late,” which apparently was WAY too fashionable, because they were at capacity and the line was outrageous. Instead, I met up with friends at another nearby hot spot, Catch. There were definite signs of NYFW there, as well. (I shared the bathroom mirror with actress Jessica Lowndes (90210), who was as stunning in real life and super sweet.)
Fashion Rocks
Night 4: Just when I thought my NYFW festivities were over, a friend of mine invited me to the live taping of Fashion Rocks, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, at The Barclays Center. I was so excited to watch some of my favorite performers such as JLO, Jennifer Hudson, and Usher, perform LIVE! Shortly after the show started, rapper 2 Chainz invited the two new friends I made to the GQ party for his birthday, so we went on this Accenture. After a couple of hours hanging out with Mr. Chainz, I had to call it a night, as I had to leave town in the morning, and I had been on a NYFW bender for the past four nights. I found the last crinkly business card I could find at the bottom of my bag, and gave it to 2 Chainz, who is one of the nicest, coolest rappers (as well as one of the only) I’ve ever met.

The past four days were definitely some of the most exciting I’ve had as a New Yorker. I also couldn’t help but notice that there were more beautiful people on the streets this week than usual. Now that I know what to expect, I look forward to more invited next year, and definitely recommend that everyone experience this, if given the opportunity!
